Newcastle Strings consists of three string ensembles, two for primary school string players (Junior and Intermediate Strings ) and one for secondary school students (Senior Strings).
Each ensemble rehearse on Monday afternoons during term time (4:00-6:00) at Merewether Highschool.
Outstanding primary students will be invited to play in the Senior Newcastle Strings providing they also play in Intermediate Strings.
Over the year the ensembles will work on 2 programs, have several performance opportunities and participate in a day workshop.
Children will be placed in the appropriate ensembles according to their standard of playing. As a guide, the minimum level of achievement for the Newcastle Senior Strings is AMEB grade 4 or Colourstrings book E or equivalent. Students learn valuable ensemble skills such as listening, leading, harmonizing, holding a part and following a conductor. Students are also given the opportunity to work on their parts in separate sectionals led by specialists in their instrument.
